National Blue Ribbon Award

On Sept. 22, 2006, St. Michael School was notified that it was selected to receive the Blue Ribbon School Award 2006. U.S Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings named 200 public schools and 50 private schools from across the nation to be awarded this recognition which honors academically superior schools and those who show dramatic gains in student achievement.

To apply for the award, a private school must teach a foreign language in the upper grades of the school, and the students in the highest grade of the school (8th grade at St. Michael) must have achieved scores in the top 10% of the nation on their most recent Achievement Tests (SAT) in Math and Reading.

"We are so pleased that St. Michael Catholic School has been named a 2006 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education," said Sister Gloria Cain, SSND Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Victoria. This award publicized to the nation what we have known for so many years, that St. Michael Catholic School challenges students to develop their full potential in order to fulfill their role as responsible individuals in today’s changing society. Congratulations to the administration, faculty, students and the entire community of St. Michael School!"

CAPE (Council for American Private Education) congratulated Sister Laura Toman, Principal and St. Michael School saying, " You, your staff, students and parents should be proud and pleased at your efforts to deliver the highest quality education; they are not only successful, but are an example to others." On November 8-11, Sister Laura and 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Jean Howze will travel to Washington DC to attend the No Child Left Behind--Blue Ribbons Schools Program 2006 reception, special presentations, and awards ceremony which will be held at the Washington Hilton & Towers. The National Catholic Educational Association will also host a reception for the award winning Catholic schools from across the U.S. at the NCEA headquarters in Washington DC. St. Michael School will receive a NCLB-Blue Ribbon School 2006 banner and a plaque recognizing St. Michael’s as a Blue Ribbon School 2006.

"Needless to say, all of us at St. Michael School, feel extremely blessed to receive this prestigious award," says Sister Laura Toman, Principal. We are proud of the work of our teachers, staff, students, parents, and school community. It is a plus for, not only St. Michael School, but for the diocese of Victoria as well as the whole community of Weimar, and we thank all who have supported us in any way throughout the years."
